Chapter Eight

Prisoners (In All Sorts of Ways)

Fitz was hungry and tired. He had been left for hours in a tiny, unfurnished room, cursing his luck and fretting about how he could have done things differently. He couldn’t see any lock on the door, but it wouldn’t open for him: the sensors on this side must have been disabled or removed. He had relieved his boredom for half an hour by trying to prise the door open manually, without success. He had also tried knocking on each wall, in the hope that someone might hear him: perhaps there were other prisoners in the next room. All he could hear was the background noise of the complex, of which his enforced solitude had made him acutely aware: a constant faint rhythm of clashes and clangs, reverberating through the metal walls until it was impossible to tell where any one sound had originated.

He gave up, lowered himself to the floor and slouched against the wall in one corner of the room. His ribs ached all down his left side. He could only imagine that Davey or one of his friends had laid into him while he was unconscious on the plain. He probably had an impressive bruise, if only he could get through his indestructible mod uniform to inspect it.

The worst part of his captivity was not knowing what would happen next.

When the door slid open, then, Fitz was as much hopeful as fearful. But hope turned to disappointment, just as fear became relief, at the sight of the sombre-faced Vince and Deborah. ‘Visiting time already, is it?’ he asked dryly.

As the door closed behind his visitors, he caught a brief glimpse of a silver-uniformed guard out in the corridor.

‘We heard what had happened,’ said Deborah.

‘You know, that you ran away from the fight and all that.’

‘It’s not true, is it? You’re not really a traitor?’

Fitz didn’t bother to stand. He buried his head in his hands and groaned loudly.

‘You said you could get us away from here,’ said Deborah, accusingly. ‘You said you could show us the future.’

‘No I didn’t,’ Fitz mumbled into his hands.

‘Were you lying to us?’

He wanted to say no, but then he remembered some of what he had told them. ‘I might have exaggerated a bit,’ he confessed. He looked up, to be met by the distressing sight of Deborah’s pixie face contorted into an expression of horrified betrayal. ‘Well, I didn’t know who I could trust!’ he protested. ‘I don’t want to take sides here, but I’m not getting anywhere with Rick and I thought –’

‘You thought you’d throw in with Alec,’ said Deborah, disapprovingly.

‘My friend – another spaceman – is with the rockers. I want to talk to him.’

‘I think we should go, Deborah,’ said Vince, quietly. ‘There’s nothing we can do here.’

Fitz scowled. ‘No, I’ll bet there isn’t – because you were never interested in helping me, were you? You just wanted to know what I could do for you.’

‘You promised,’ said Deborah, sulkily. ‘You said the future was here.
